About Monica DePaul

Trans lesbian writer of poetry and young adult fiction

Monica DePaul was born in Staten Island, New York, and grew up in Palm Coast, Florida, before settling down in Jacksonville, Florida. She holds an M.A. in English from the University of North Florida. An educator and activist, she is currently a substitute teacher for Duval County schools while querying literary agents for her upcoming book, Amy Able's Burning Blood. She blogs about her life, her writing, and the world every single day in haiku form. In the past, she taught and tutored college-level writing and attempted a long-shot run for Congress. In 2016, she made history as the first transgender delegate from Florida at the Democratic National Convention, helping represent Senator Bernie Sanders.

“What if everything you see is more than what you see--the person next to you is a warrior and the space that appears empty is a secret door to another world? What if something appears that shouldn't? You either dismiss it, or you accept that there is much more to the world than you think. Perhaps it is really a doorway, and if you choose to go inside, you'll find many unexpected things.”
